According to mmajunkie.com, Benson Henderson and Rustam Khabilov are set to headline the UFC’s debut in Albuquerque, on June 7th. The fight will be five rounds in the lightweight division, and will be held in the Tingley Coliseum.
Henderson, the former UFC lightweight champion, earned a very controversial victory over Josh Thomson back in late January. The victory was his first since losing the belt to current champion Anthony Pettis. Henderson is 8-1 in the UFC.
Khabilov is a native of Russia, but now lives and trains fulltime in Albuquerque, at Jackson’s MMA. The 27-year-old is one of the lightweight division’s top prospects, having earned victories over Vinc Pichel, Yancy Medeiros and most recently, a FOTN victory over Jorge Masvidal. He is undefeated in the UFC (3-0), and has only lost once in his professional career.
For the many fighters representing Jackson’s MMA, this card is very attractive. It is an opportunity to fight for the UFC in front of Albuquerque’s loyal MMA fan base for the first time. This draw is part of the reason that the UFC has chosen to hold an event in Albuquerque, despite Tingley Area having a capacity of just 11,000.
The fights will be on June 7th, and will likely air on Fox Sports 1.
