Just days after news of Georges St. Pierre announced that he is vacating his belt and Johny Hendricks vs. Robby Lawler being set for the vacant belt, a scrap for the number one contender spot will join the UFC 171 card. According to MMAJunkie.com, Carlos Condit (29-7) will take on Tyron Woodley (12-2) in a fight where the winner should emerge with a title shot. Also added is a lightweight fight featuring the always exciting Diego Sanchez (24-6) taking the roll of gatekeeper when he locks horns with undefeated rising star Myles Jury (13-0).
Condit—who is widely considered a top welterweight contender—was supposed to fight Matt Brown at UFC on Fox 9 last Saturday, however Brown was forced to pull out of the fight due to an injury. Condit has defeated multiple contenders over his long career, including Martin Kampmann, Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald, Jake Ellenberger, Dong Hyun Kim and Dan Hardy. Condit has also fought Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks. His last fight came against Martin Kampmann, in which he earned a TKO victory, early in the fourth round.
Woodley is coming off of an impressive knockout victory over longtime UFC veteran Josh Koscheck and will be looking to jump higher up the welterweight rankings with a win.
The other recently added fight will feature Diego Sanchez Vs. Myles Jury. At UFC 166, Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez put on one of the greatest fights in UFC history. Unfortunately for Sanchez, he came out on the wrong side of the decision, earning a hard fought loss. Sanchez was a contestant on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter, in which he defeated Kenny Florian via TKO in the show’s finale. Sanchez has also defeated Takanori Gomi, Martin Kampmann, Glay Guida and Paulo Thiago.
Opposing Diego Sanchez will be the undefeated Myles Jury, who has been on a roll ever since he became a professional fighter. Jury is also a former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter. In season 13 he tore his ACL and was unable to compete for a year. He came back two seasons later, in which he made his UFC debut against Chris Saunders, and won by way of submission. Jury is 13-0 as a professional fighter, and 4-0 in the UFC, with victories coming against Michael Johnson, Ramsey Nijem, Mike Ricci, and the aforementioned Chris Saunders.
UFC 171 will take place on March 15th, in Dallas Texas.
