Season 20 of The Ultimate Fighter will feature something brand new to the UFC. According to UFC.com, the season will feature an all women’s roster, as well as a women’s strawweight division. The 115-pound cast will be comprised of 11 strawweights, formerly of Invicta FC, who will compete in the tournament, for a chance to become the latest Ultimate Fighter. However, the stakes have been raised for season 20. The winner of the season will not only be crowned the next Ultimate Fighter, but they will also become the inaugural UFC strawweight champion. In addition to the 11 strawweights from Invicta, five other women will be selected to the competition through tryouts, making for an even 16 contestants. The coaches have not yet been announced.
Currently, the only women’s division in the UFC is the 135 bantamweight division, featuring superstar Ronda Rousey as the current champion. UFC President Dana White said to MMAfighting, “The 135-pound division has been very successful for us, the fans like it, I’m thrilled with it, and we’re going to dive into the 115-pound division now.”
The 11 strawweights coming from Invicta include their current strawweight champion, Carla Esparza, as well as Joanne Caldwerood, Alex Chambers, Claudia Gadelha, Felice Herrig, Bec Hyatt, Emily Kagan, Juilianna Lima, Rose Namajunas, Tecia Torres and Paige Van Zant.
