During the UFC Brisbane prefight show, an exciting new fight was announced. UFC veteran Rashad Evans is set to welcome Daniel Cormier to the light heavyweight division, in the main event for UFC 170 on February 22nd at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Evans is coming off a dominant TKO victory over Chael Sonnen, in what was widely being described as a perfect fight for Evans. The 34-year-old former UFC champion is currently ranked third in the light heavyweight division, and will be looking to earn another shot at reclaiming his title, at the expense of Daniel Cormier.
Undefeated in his professional MMA career, Cormier will look to push his streak to 14 consecutive wins. The U.S. Olympic wrestler made his UFC debut last April against a former champion in Frank Mir. Cormier neutralized Mir’s weapons, earning the unanimous decision. He earned another unanimous decision against Roy Nelson at UFC 166 back in October. Cormier is currently ranked as the number two contender in the heavyweight division, and will look to carry over his success into the light heavyweight division.
Evans and Cormier are known to be friends outside of the octagon, which should add to the storyline of the already exciting fight. Per Ariel Helwani, Evans was quoted saying, “I don’t want to fight Daniel (Cormier). We go way back to college. I’ve been sick about it over the past few days.”
