Despite UFC President Dana White saying he wants to bring Gilbert Melendez to the UFC “ASAP,” the champ’s rumored title defense against Jorge Masvidal is now official. The Strikeforce Lightweight Title bout will be the main event on December 17th at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
Tickets go on sale this week for the exciting card also featuring a battle between light heavyweights Gegard Mousasi and Ovince St Preux and the return of Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos after along layoff. The number one female fighter in the world will take on the taller Hiroko Yamanaka at 145 lbs.
Melendez has not fought since April when he defeated Tatsuya Kawajiri in at the same arena that he will again defend his belt in. He has vaulted himself to the top of the world lightweight rankings and has not lost since 2008.
Masvidal is coming off of an impressive unanimous decision victory against K.J. Noons in June. Before that he bested undefeated Billy Evangelista also via decision. “Game Bred” will be training extra hard in Miami for the biggest test and opportunity of his career.
