King of the Cage “First Defense” Fight Analysis and Results: Papazian Retains Belt

FIGHT #1: Manny Murillo vs Ronald Lebreton

Both men come out swinging with reckless abandon.  Trading punches for the majority of the first round.  Not exactly a technical affair.  Lebreton tries for a double leg against the cage but Murillo stuffs it and get on top, reigning down punches until Larry Landless stops the bout at 2:59.  The winner via TKO, Manny Murillo.

FIGHT #2: Jimmy Stormo vs Lucas Taber

The big guys clash front and center.  They clinch, Taber goes to back and gets an armbar forcing the tap early in the first round.  Taber wins via armbar submission.

FIGHT #3: Gabe Rivas vs Alex Rickards

Rivas comes out firing and cuts Rickards with a big right hand.  He continues to land punches, Rickards shoots but is stuffed and Rivas gets into side mount.  He reigns down punches and elbows the the face and body forcing the stoppage with seconds left in the first round.  Rivas wins via TKO.

 FIGHT #4 Kris Armbrister vs Jesus Morales

Morales comes out punching.  Armbrister gets the clinch, Morales grabs hold of a guillotine but is picked up and slammed hard onto the canvas.  Morales remains on bottom but regains full guard.  He tries to get up but gives up his back and is brought back to the canvas.  Armbrister quickly sinks in a RNC and forces the tap.  Armbrister wins via RNC submission.

FIGHT #5 Boyko Ranchev vs Brian Warren

Warren lands a big right hand that stuns Ranchev, but is unable to capitalize.  They continue to feel each other out on the feet.  Some clunch work on the cage ensues with Warren getting the better of it.  They break and strike some.  Warren lands a spinning back kick but Ranchev takes it with ease.  Warren catches a push kick and lands a right hand that forces Ranchev to his back as the round comes to a close. Round one clearly 10-9 Warren.

Ranchev comes out at a higher pace as his cardio appears to be on a higher level.  He lands a body kick and they clinch with Warren keeping cage control.  Warren lands a big left hook, but Ranchev stuffs his takedown and ends up on top.  He gets to side mount and works his ground and pound.  He takes Warren’s back and continues to punch away.  Warren finally gets back to his feet.  BNoth men have their hands down and are fatigued from the high pace.  Ranchev secures a takedown after being hit with some punches.  Round 2 10-9 Ranchev.

Ranchev’s better cardio begins to pay off.  The round is rather even early on.  Ranchev secures a takedown.  They get stood up for inactivity.  Warren shoots and is stuffed.  They clinch with Warren pressing Ranchev against the cage.  Warren lands a left hook and again presses the Bulgarian against the cage.  The round ends and is a tough one to call.

Judges score the fight 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 in favor of Brian Warren.

FIGHT #6 Jared Papazian vs Marvin Garcia

Papazian stuffs Garcia’s first takedown and reverses him against the cage.  Garcia clearly doesn’t want to trade with Papazian once they break.  Papazian keeps cage control pressing Garcia against the cage for the majority of the first round.  Jared lands a few punches during one of the few striking exchanges.  Round one clearly 10-9 Papazian.

Garcia comes out firing and lands in tight.  Papazian shrugs it off and clinches.  Garcia gets a judo throw, but Papazian pops right up and presses the shorter man against the cage.  Papazian keeps control on the cage.  Papazian gets a takedown but falls right into a guillotine.  It looks deep, but Papazian stays calm and pops his head out after a good 20-30 seconds.  Round 2 could go either way.

They clinch and each guy goes for a takedown.  Garcia ends up on top but goes for an armbar as Papazian sneak out.  Papazian pulls out and ends up on top.  They make it back to their feet.  Papazian lands some strikes but appears fatigued.  Garcia gets a big takedown slam but can’t keep the champ on his back.  Round three is also close and tough to call.

The champ secures a takedown a minute in and moves to half guard.  Garcia makes it back to his feet and presses the champ against the cage.  Papazian lands a left hook and a knee.  They clinch and Garcia nearly gets a takedown but it’s stuffed.  Round four 10-9 Papazian.

Garcia lands a punch taht bloodies teh champ’s nose, then nearly earns a takedown.  They slug it out trading a few punches.  Garcia gets a takedown, Papazian reverses it after using a kneebar submission and winds up in the challenger’s half guard.    Papazian and shoulder strikes to try and make space.  Herb Dean stands them up.  Papazian lands a head kick, Garcia smiles.  Papazian presses Garcia against the cage, landing knees and looking for a takedown.  The round concludes with a flurry.  10-9 Papazian in round 5.

Judges score the bout 48-47, 50-45, 48-47 for Jared Papazian, retains his title.

  1. This fight versus Marvin Garcia was a great one. I think Garcia deserves a rematch personally. He doesn’t really deserve to have a loss like this one stain his perfect record. I think they’re both great fighters and definately anticipate to see Garcia learn from this and return a monster in the cage. I think most people would also agree Jared was fortunate to win this fight. But survive he did and for that does he deserves to walk away still champ. But only for that.

  2. Sounds like Ranchev and Warren was good too. My last fight was vs. Ranchev. I broke my hand in the first punch and went on to hurt it so bad in that fight that I had to retire.
    He is a tough Bulgarian. Congrats to all the fighters.
